2. Seizures in School
-
Impact on Student Learning
While most students with epilepsy perform well in school, around 30% will encounter significant learning challenges for a variety of reasons:
- Frequent seizures do not allow for enough recovery time between seizures and cause fatigue as well as memory problems.
- Medications can cause drowsiness, slowing of mental processing and behavior changes.
- Absenteeism leads to missed learning opportunities and social interactions with peers.
- Seizures can also affect a student’s mental health.
-
Seizure Action Plan
Students with seizures will have a Ministry of Education Seizure Action Plan that is completed by parents/guardians, primary care provider/specialist and the school.

Seizure Action Plan Example
Refer to the Government of BC website or specific school district process for the most up to date action plan and associated documents.
